About Lorem Ipsum Generator
When you are laying out a page before the real copy exists, you need text that looks like language without inviting anyone to read it. Real sentences pull reviewers into editing the wording. Lorem ipsum keeps their eyes on the layout, the type and the spacing.
Choose a unit and a count, and the text is ready to copy. You can start with the familiar opening line or skip it, and you can have the output wrapped in paragraph or list tags, ready to drop into a template.
How it works
The opening sentence is fixed: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Everything after it is built at random from a list of 145 Latin-looking words taken from the traditional passage and the related at vero eos text. The same word never appears twice in a row, which is a giveaway in cruder generators.
Sentences run from 7 to 16 words, and longer ones sometimes get a comma, so lines of text have a natural rhythm. Paragraphs hold 4 to 7 sentences. List items are 3 to 8 words with a capital and no period. New text is drawn with a new random seed each time you press the button, so two runs differ. The count stops at 1,000 of any unit.

A real run: three list items, wrapped in HTML
Generate: List items
How many: 3
Wrap in HTML tags: on<ul>
<li>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet</li>
<li>Sed perferendis nobis</li>
<li>Mollit iusto duis molestias nihil in</li>
</ul>Your words will differ after the first item, since the rest is random. This output came from a fixed seed. Plain mode gives the same items with a hyphen in front of each.
When it helps
- Filling a new web page design so the layout can be judged before the copy is written
- Testing how a card, table or menu handles long and short text
- Giving a print layout realistic text color and line breaks
- Populating a test database or a content system with sample entries
- Checking a font at body size over several paragraphs
Tips for a better result
- Test long and short cases. Real content is rarely as even as placeholder paragraphs, so try a single word and a very long run in the same component.
- Turn off the classic opening when you need several blocks at once. Five cards all starting with the same words look artificial.
- If you are testing a layout for a language with long words, such as German, or a different script, this Latin-style text will not show those problems.
- Replace placeholder text before going live. Search for
loremacross your site as a final check, since leftover filler looks careless and gives search engines nothing to index.
Good to know
- This is not real Latin and it means nothing, so it cannot help you judge how real copy reads.
- The word list is not the full original passage in order. Only the first sentence matches the classic text.
- HTML mode covers
<p>and<ul>with<li>. It does not add headings, links or emphasis. - Word mode gives one block, with a capital at the start and a period at the end, and no commas.
- The count is limited to 1,000 of any unit, and a block cannot be recalled once you generate a new one, so copy what you want to keep.
Questions people ask
What does lorem ipsum actually mean?
It is scrambled Latin, based loosely on a passage by Cicero. The words were cut and altered over the years, so it has no real meaning, which is why it works as filler.
Why does text change each time I press the button?
Each press picks a new random seed so you can get a fresh block. The opening line stays the same when that option is on, and the rest is new.
How many words is one paragraph?
It varies. A paragraph has 4 to 7 sentences of 7 to 16 words each, so roughly 30 to 110 words. Use Words mode when you need an exact count.
Can I use it in a live website?
You can, as nobody owns it, but it should never stay there. A page of filler tells visitors nothing, and search engines treat it as having no value.
