About PDF Unlock Helper

A password that was useful once can turn into a nuisance. Bank statements and payslips often arrive protected with a date of birth or an ID number, and you must type it every time. Protected files also get refused by merging software, document systems and upload forms. If you have the password, an unlocked copy solves all of that.

Be clear about the limits of this tool. It needs the correct password. Without one, it cannot do anything, and nothing here tries to guess or work around it. Only remove protection from files you are entitled to open.

How it works

The tool first reads how the file is protected, which needs no password, and tells you. The path then depends on what it finds. RC4 files at 40 or 128 bits are decrypted directly: your password is checked using the algorithms in the PDF specification, every stream and string is decrypted, and the encryption entry is deleted. Text, links and layout are all kept. A test round trip came back with its text intact, and the file bytes no longer contained /Encrypt.

AES files, and others using newer crypt filters, cannot be rewritten by this tool's PDF library. It can still read them with pdf.js if your password is right, so it offers a different result: Make unlocked image copy draws each page at 200 DPI into a new, unprotected PDF. It looks the same, but text can no longer be selected or searched, and links stop working. The page tells you this before you run it. Either way, the output is opened with no password as a final check before the download appears. Files with printing or copying restrictions need the owner password, since holding only the open password does not give you the right to lift them.

How to use PDF Unlock Helper

  1. Press Select protected PDF or drop the file on the page.
  2. Read the line naming the encryption, and type into PDF password. The eye button shows what you typed.
  3. Press Remove password or the Enter key. For newer encryption, the button reads Make unlocked image copy.
  4. Download the new file, which gets -unlocked added to its name.

A real run on a file from our protect tool

Input
plans-protected.pdf, RC4 128-bit, 3 pages
First try: wrong
Second try: the correct password
Output
That password is not correct. Passwords are case sensitive, so check for capital letters and try again.

Checked: the new file opens without a password, with its text intact.
plans-protected-unlocked.pdf, 2.2 KB
Pages 3 pages | Was protected by RC4 128-bit

The unlocked file was 2.2 KB against 4.1 KB for the protected one, because it could be saved with object streams again. A plain PDF sent to this tool gets a message saying there is nothing to remove.

When it helps

  • Removing the date-of-birth password from your own bank statements before filing them
  • Getting a file you have the password for into a merge or other PDF tool
  • Uploading a protected payslip to a portal that rejects encrypted files
  • Clearing an old password from your own document once it is no longer needed

Tips for a better result

  • If a bank or employer sent the file, their email usually explains the password format, such as a date with no separators.
  • If a file only opens with a restriction message, you need its owner password. The open password will be accepted for reading, but the tool will tell you it cannot lift the restrictions.
  • Check what you received before relying on it. An image copy cannot be searched, so if you need text, the source of the document may be able to provide one with weaker or no protection.
  • Store the unlocked copy somewhere private. The protection is gone for good on that copy, so anyone who gets it can read it.

Good to know

  • It cannot open a file without the right password, and it will not try to crack one.
  • AES-protected files, and RC4 files using newer crypt filters, come back as images at 200 DPI: no selectable text, search, links or form fields.
  • An AES file with printing or copying restrictions cannot be converted at all, and you get a message saying so.
  • Digital signatures on the original will not survive, because the file has changed. The largest file it takes is 100 MB.

Questions people ask

Can this remove a password I do not know?

No. It uses your password to decrypt the file, so the password is essential. There is no guessing, dictionary or bypass feature, and there will not be.

Why did my file come back as images?

It uses AES or another newer encryption, which this tool can read but not rewrite. Each page is redrawn so you still get an unlocked file, at the cost of its text layer. Removing the password in Adobe Acrobat will keep the text.

Does my password leave my device?

No. It is used only by the code in this tab, on a file read from your own disk. Neither of them is sent anywhere.

Why is the correct password refused?

Check capitals and any spaces. If the message mentions restrictions, the file needs the owner password, which is different from the one you open it with. Only the file's creator is likely to have that.
